Theory Test

The learner’s knowledge of the rules of the road will first be examined in the driving theory test. It is split into two sections;

the first is a series of multiple choice questions on highway regulations, road markings, signs, emergency procedures and other relevant subjects. At least 43 of the 50 questions must be answered correctly within the 57 minute time limit.

Case study questions

Typically, five of the 50 questions will take the form of a case study. All five questions will be based on a single driving situation and appear one at a time.

Case studies are designed to test that you not only know your car theory but also that you understand how to apply your knowledge when faced with a given driving situation.

The second part is a hazard perception test, during which 14 video clips are played featuring a total of 15 developing hazards. Candidates are marked out of five for the speed with which they respond to the danger. A score of 44 out of a potential 75 is required.

You have to pass both parts in order to pass your Theory Test. You will receive your test scores at the end of the test. Even if you only failed on one part of the Theory Test, you still have to take both parts again next time.

Learn The Highway Code

The Highway Code is essential reading for all drivers and not just those learning to drive. It sets out all the rules for good driving, as well as the rules for other road users such as pedestrians and motorcycle riders. When you have learned the rules you will be able to answer most of the questions in the Theory Test and be ready to start learning the driving skills you will need to pass your Practical Test.
